Moving into your own place means sorting the bills that used to be handled for you. It is simpler than it looks if you take it step by step. Getting it right early avoids surprise charges later.
Check what is included first
Before you do anything, check your agreement. In some rooms and shared houses, bills are included in the rent. In your own tenancy, you usually pay them yourself. Ask the landlord what you are responsible for.
Take meter readings on day one
When you move in, take photos of the gas and electricity meter readings, and note the date. This makes sure you only pay for what you use, not what the last person left behind.
Set up your accounts
- •Find out who supplies the gas and electricity, and set up an account.
- •Contact the water company for the area.
- •Sort broadband if you need it, and compare deals.
- •Tell the council you have moved so your council tax is correct.
Check if you can get help
If money is tight, you may be able to get help. Some suppliers have hardship funds and cheaper tariffs, and you can check you are getting all the benefits you are entitled to. Our guide on budgeting on benefits has more, and a free adviser can point you to grants.
Council tax
Let the council know your new address. You may get a discount, for example if you live alone, and some people on low incomes can get council tax support. It is worth asking.
