Moving to your own place is a big step forward. It also brings new responsibilities that support staff may have helped with before. A bit of preparation makes the move smoother and less stressful.
Get your money ready
Work out what your rent, bills and living costs will be, and check what benefits you will get in your new home. Set up a simple budget so you know what you have each week. Our guide on budgeting for rent on benefits can help.
Learn the practical skills

- •Cooking simple meals and food shopping on a budget
- •Keeping on top of cleaning and washing
- •Dealing with post and appointments
Sort the essentials for your new home
You will need some basic furniture and household items. There are charities and grants that help with this, and your support worker or council may know of local schemes. Do not feel you have to buy everything at once.
Keep a support network
Independent does not mean alone. Keep the phone numbers of people you trust, including your old support worker if you can, and know where to get help locally. Moving on works best when you still have people to call on.
Plan the move with your worker
If you are in supported housing, plan the move with your support worker so nothing is missed. Our guide on moving on to your own tenancy covers what changes when you get your own place, and you can start looking on Signpost when you are ready.
