If you have nowhere safe to sleep tonight, you are not alone and there are people whose job is to help. Acting quickly gives you the best chance of getting somewhere safe.
If you are in immediate danger
Call 999. Your safety comes first. If you are fleeing abuse, the police can help you get to a place of safety.
Contact your local council
Every council has a housing options or homelessness team with a legal duty to help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Contact them as early in the day as you can. Outside office hours, most councils have an emergency out of hours number on their website.
What they may ask
They will usually ask about your situation, whether you have anywhere else to stay, and whether you have children or health needs. Be honest and clear. If you feel you are not being helped, you can ask to make a formal homelessness application.
Search emergency listings
You can also search emergency and supported accommodation on Signpost and enquire directly with providers who have space. Filter by your area to see what is available near you.
Take care of yourself
Keep your phone charged, keep important documents with you if you can, and reach out to a trusted person. This is a hard moment, but it is one you can get through with the right help.
